WCWL - Canadian Bioethics Society Colloquium
WCWL announces the release of its report on improving fairness of the health care system so that
access to care would be timely and prioritized on the basis of urgency. This report describes how
existing WCWL priority criteria scoring tools can be adapted to manage referrals from primary care
to specialists. The report also describes how western regional health authorities and provinces have
put these tools to use. Finally, it describes a method to develop waiting times based on patient
urgency, and applies this in cataract removal surgery and hip and knee replacement surgery. To view

In October 2004 WCWL in association with the Canadian Bioethics Society hosted a symposium on New Zealand’s approach to wait list prioritization and access to care. Professor Donald Evans, Director of the Otago Bioethics Centre in Dunedin, New Zealand, presented a paper on the subject. Professor Tim Caulfield (Edmonton), Mr. Steven Lewis (Saskatoon) and Dr. Ian Mitchell (Calgary) provided commentary.
