Discussion between family physicians and specialists participating in our five original multidisciplinary clinical panels pointed to the desirability of having similar point-count urgency scoring tools to prioritize referrals from primary care to specialists.

The WCWL Primary Care Project will undertake a process to determine which WCWL tools could be adapted, refined, and used to assist primary care providers and specialists in this regard. Further, it will present an opportunity to measure the length of time patients wait for a referral and the communication between primary and secondary care providers.

The objective of the Primary Care Project is to develop user-friendly, clinically coherent scoring systems that specialists could use to judge the urgency of referrals coming from primary care physicians.
